Creating a blog is a great way to make money online and build an audience for everything else you do. It can not only allow you to eventually give up your day job, it also means you can make a living from whatever your passion is.

What is a blog?

This is a blog. A blog is either a website, or sometimes part of a website. The part that is is updated and has new posts added to it. I suppose, simply, the blog is the page where you add new posts. So, my blog is a page that I have made the home page of this website. The pages are what makes the entire website.

Blogs were originally more of a journaling platform used primarily by angsty teenagers in 2001, but over time they’ve become an essential part of all websites for all businesses and the primary option for people looking to create engaging content.

How do I start a blog?

There are several platforms available.

The first option, and my preference, is to purchase some hosting (I like Bluehost and Unlimited Web Hosting) and then buy your domain name and install wordpress software. WordPress is a piece of software that allows you to create a blog easily, and I’ll be doing a tutorial on this at some point in the future. If you’re not particularly confident setting up a website from scratch, or you just don’t have the funds available to pay for hosting then you can use free blogging websites like Blogger.com, WordPress.com or Webnode.  These platforms may have limitations the reduce your ability to earn from your blog posts, but they do offer a great way of getting started and creating an audience before moving on to building your own website from scratch.

What shall I write a blog about?

You can start writing a blog about any topic at all, but the best thing to do is write about what you’re passionate about. I started Money without leaving the house because I’m passionate not only about being able to earn a leaving from the comfort of my living room, but also to help others do the same. So often I see people struggling to get by on minimum wage and it frustrates me when I know that there are so many different ways for those people to earn so much more.

So, what are you passionate about? If there is nothing that springs to mind that you are passionate enough about then just look for a niche that you think would be popular.

How much money can I make from my blog?

The best thing about blogging is that your income completely unlimited. 4% of bloggers earn over $10,000 a month, and the highest earning blog earns $2.5 million dollars a month. If you produce high quality content and engage with your readers well you have a great earning potential.

How do I make money from a blog?

Its all very well creating content, but content alone doesn’t generate income. Content generates readers, and from those readers you generate income using other means.

Google Adsense – Google Adsense is a pay per click ad platform. Companies pay google for every click they get on their ads. You display adverts on your website and in turn google pay you every time someone clicks on an advert. The amount you get varies depending on what the business owner is paying Google. The best thing about Google ads is that they display adverts that are relevant to the user, and this increases the likelihood of them clicking on the ad.

Affiliate Advertising- Affiliate advertising is where you post a link to a particular product and when someone purchases the item through that link you make a percentage of the total value of the sale.

The most popular affiliate programme is Amazon Affiliates. They pay for all purchases made when someone clicks through to their website from your link. The usual payment is around 5% commission, and this can really mount up, especially if you’re promoting particularly high priced products.

I also use Awin which is great for UK users, and if you are targetting the US you could also use CJaffiliates or ShareaSale. On these sites you can choose from a huge array of business that all offer their own affiliate programmes.

Create Courses – Creating courses is one of the best ways that smaller blogs can generate a decent income. You can host these either on your own website or on a site like udemy.com that is specifically designed for people to host their own courses.

Write and sell books – You can publish books on amazon and already have an audience that you can promote your book to of people that are interested in the topic you are writing about. You can also create your own pdf ebooks and sell them directly on your site.

Create Membership only areas – If you offer a lot of high quality content then you could offer membership only areas of your website.
